Galway Arms

Last Saturday we went to the Basil Leaf Cafe for an excellent dinner (http://www.basilleaf.com/). After dinner, we decided to get drinks at the Galway Arms. The Galway Arms is one of our favorite places to go (except for the Lady Gaga incident circa December 2009). Once there, we decided to look at the dessert menu. Lo and behold, they had creme brulee! Brian was thrilled.

The creme brulee at the Galway Arms is a Guinness Creme Brulee. And it is not good.

Brian: overall, a half a star. It came out in the untraditional creme brulee dish. It looked like it had potential with a nicely burnt top (see picture left), but then I felt the top and knew it was going to be trouble. After one scoop in, I could see that the custard was not right. My initial reaction tasting was that it had been frozen and not all the way thawed. Others at the table thought that it was bread pudding and that they had accidentally brought out the wrong dessert.

Liz: for sure one of the worst creme brulees I have had. It gets 0/5 from me. To be fair, I love the Galway Arms: I love their veggie burger, their french fries and their salads. But this dessert was not good.

Now, onto House Hunters. HGTV, start at home.

Dunlay's on Clark

Hello!

It's Brian and Liz.

Brian has long had a dream to try every creme brulee in the city of Chicago. Being such a good supporter and girlfriend, Liz agreed that such an endeavor would be fun. So, truth be told, Brian has been trying creme brulees at various spots across the city for some time now. But just last weekend - at the law review banquet - Liz embarrassed Brian by telling others of his dream and the suggestion of a blog was born.

So here we are. Unfortunately Brian's clever name of "cremebrulog" was taken by some equally creme brulicious blogger in Minnesota, so we had to add the "chicago." After all, the idea is to try all the creme brulees in Chicago anyway.

Although Brian has previously tried the creme brulee at several Chicago restaurants, we have decided to start anew.

Tonight we went to Dunlay's on Clark. Liz wanted to go to some other restaurant but Brian wasn't having it. So, being a Friday night, it was busy. Really busy. They told us we'd have to wait half an hour for a table, but it turned out being more like 50 minutes. BUT, they gave us a free round of drinks for our troubles, so that was nice. As Brian likes to say, "on to the brulee."

Brian gives it 2/5. Liz gives it 2/5.

Brian: It came out in a big oatmeal-style bowl. A bowl that you would eat oatmeal out of. Not the traditional, small creme brulee bowl (Liz adds "not a ramekin.") Brian got excited, thinking it would be a super-large serving of creme brulee. But it wasn't. The bowl wasn't very deep, which was disappointing. It was served with a single strawberry on top. The top sugar wasn't crispy enough. The bottom custard wasn't warm enough, which may have been a result of the top sugar not being crispy enough. Overall, it was an average to below average brulee dish.

Liz: I wish the sugar would have been more burnt and a little thicker on the top.

Goodnight!

Brian and Liz are going to know watch the Denver Nuggets & Utah Jazz game. They care very deeply about basketball.
